Reconstructive Urological Surgery

Reconstructive urological surgery is a specialized branch of urology that focuses on repairing or reconstructing the urinary tract and male reproductive system. This type of surgery is typically performed to correct congenital abnormalities, injuries, structural issues, or complications resulting from other medical treatments. The primary goal of reconstructive urological surgery is to restore normal functioning and improve the patient's quality of life. Here are some common conditions and procedures associated with reconstructive urological surgery:

  • Hypospadias Repair: Hypospadias is a congenital condition in which the opening of the urethra is located on the underside of the penis rather than the tip. Surgery is performed to reposition the urethral opening to the tip of the penis.
  • Urethral Stricture Repair: Urethral strictures are narrowed sections of the urethra, often caused by scar tissue or injury. Surgery involves widening or removing the narrowed area to restore proper urine flow.
  • Bladder Reconstruction: Procedures may be necessary to reconstruct or augment the bladder due to congenital defects, injury, or diseases like bladder cancer. These surgeries aim to restore bladder function and urinary continence.
  • Vesicovaginal and Rectovaginal Fistula Repair: Fistulas are abnormal connections between the bladder and vagina (vesicovaginal) or the rectum and vagina (rectovaginal). Surgical repair is needed to close these connections and restore normal anatomy and function.
  • Ureteral Reimplantation: This procedure may be necessary to correct abnormal positioning of the ureters, which are the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
